When dabbing, you first need to heat up the nail with a torch. Once the nail is hot enough, collect a small amount of concentrate (aka, a dab), either in a wax or oil form, and place it directly onto your heated rig. Place your mouth on the mouthpiece as you apply the wax – the vapor should materialize immediately and once it does, you can begin to inhale.
Low temp dabbing is when you take a dab at a lower temperature and cover the heating source with a carb cap while inhaling. This results in the process of convection, and much like a Dutch oven, the heat gets trapped and causes concentrate that would normally not have enough heat to vape, to completely vaporize efficiently, leading to more powerful, flavorful dabs.
Heat the domeless nail between 500 and 600°F. A good rule of thumb is to remove the heat source once the nail begins to change color, wait 10 seconds, and then take your dab.
— Less harsh on your lungs
— Full terpene, CBD, and THC expression
— Less risk of burning your concentrate
— Additional hardware – Carb caps
— Some people think the affect is a little milder than a high-temp
A carb cap creates a chamber in which the concentrates airflow is restricted. It combines both conduction-style and convection-style heating on a domeless nail by covering it – allowing your concentrate to spread out and be evenly vaporized. Carb caps are made of titanium, ceramic, glass or quartz.
It is possible to use your finger to cover the hole of the dome for the same effect, but so do at your own risk. Many have burned their fingertips on bubbling oil – not fun.
A lot of experienced smokers prefer the experience of a hot temperature dabbing because it is more convenient and less messy. First, the domeless nail is heated to roughly 1000°F. Then, the wax dab is directly placed onto the nails surface and turns to vapor almost immediately for consumption.
— Can feel a bit of a rush
— You’re able to get all of the wax to melt very quickly, regardless of its consistency
— No carb cap– less risk of wasting oil because it evaporates extremely quickly
— Burn off a lot of the THC, CBD, and terpenes
— More likely to burn or scorch your dab, making the experience unpleasant
— Harsh. Super hot dabs can hurt on their way down
