Why use a Percolator Bongs for Premium Filtration

For most of us, making the jump from a simple smoking pipe to a bong is immeasurable. Bongs offer water filtration which makes one’s smoking session that much more enjoyable. Of course, the main purpose of water filtration is to cool down the smoke before it reaches your lungs leading to a much smoother experience overall. You may be wondering, is there any way to improve my smoking experience any further outside of a standard bongor silicone bong? Fortunately, there is.

It is called a percolator bong. Essentially, a percolator is an additional layer within your bong that acts as a filter of sorts. In addition to water filtration, percolators further reduce the temperature of the smoke taking one’s experience to the next level. Percolators come in a range of styles – downstem, honeycomb, inline, shower head, swiss, and much more. Each style of percolator has its own benefits and downsides. You can find pre-built percolator bongs and percolator attachments that fit your standard bong. It is quite common to have multiple levels of percolators in a bong – more layers equal a cooler and smoother smoke. Ultimately, percolator bongs are the Rolls Royce of water filtrations systems within the bong category.

As we briefly mentioned above, percolators come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Finding the ‘perfect’ percolator will come down to personal preference. Here is a brief breakdown of some of the different types of percolator systems available today:

  • Double percolators encompass multiple styles of percs with one factor remaining constant – there are two layers of percolation at work. The primary benefit behind double percs is the additional filtration in addition to water filtration which makes your smoking experience incredibly smooth.
  • Downstem percolators are the ‘original’ percolator and have been around for quite some time. They appear in the shape of a stem and can be a separate piece altogether or are built into the bong itself (referred to as stemless bongs a lot of the time). In its essence, the downstem reaches down into the water and acts as a tube for air. As one draws the water begins to bubble, i.e. percolate.
  • Honeycomb percolators are made in the shape of a disc with numerous small holes allowing for greater filtration with limited drag. They are designed to easily fit into your bong and take up little space. Thus, one can have multiple layers of honeycomb percs in their setup to maximize filtration.
  • Swiss percolators earned their name by mirroring the look of swiss cheese making them more unique. With swiss percs you will essentially find tons of different sized holes within a bong in comparison to the uniform holes of a honeycomb perc. These holes are designed to reduce drag and provide optimal diffusion to make your smoking session more luxurious.
  • Differing in shape, inline percs are horizontal tubes with multiple slits carved into them for increased diffusion. Generally, more slits are equal to greater diffusion, i.e. better filtration.
  • Another reputable style of percolator, the showerhead percs utilize a tube that reaches into the main chamber of the bong and then has a second larger tube which pulls the smoke up and down through multiple slits. The number of slits in a shower head perc will range whilst the ultimate function will remain the same.

The protocol for using a percolator bong is not any different from a standard bong. At the end of the day you still are utilizing a bowl and water filtration. The only thing that will change with percolator bongs is the way in which you clean them. Admittedly, cleaning percolator bongs can be a bit more difficult since you are cleaning another piece after all.

Regardless of whether you have a standard bong or a fancier percolator bong, you are still taking advantage of water filtration which is miles ahead of traditional smoking pipes. Outside of water filtration, percolator bongs give users an added smoothness to their smoking session with increased filtration. Percolators bongs will look different from standard bongs and command a higher price tag in many cases. Choosing between a percolator and standard bong will be dependent on multiple factors – personal preference and budget comes to mind. While it is true that percolators make the smoking experience more pleasurable, a standard bong that utilizes water filtration is still perfectly acceptable and will not disappoint.
