If you're a vaper that likes to take a vape pen wherever you go, you should be up to date on the latest rules and regulations regarding air travel with a portable vape. Don't run the risk of losing your favorite smoking tool to the TSA and learn what to do and (more importantly) what NOT to do to make sure your travel runs smoothly.
Whether it's a day hike, a tropical taking your vape to the beach, or a culture-infused trip around the world. But, are you up to date on the latest rules and regulations regarding air travel with a portable vape? Don't run the risk of losing your favorite smoking tool to the TSA and learn what to do and (more importantly) what NOT to do to make sure your travel runs smoothly.
A new TSA regulation passed late last year that banned portable vaporizer pens and other battery-operated electronic smoking devices from checked luggage. Why? According to the Department of Transportation, since 2009, there have been at least 26 incidents of explosions or fires caused by e-cigarette and vaporizer lithium ion batteries. Similar situations have also occurred with laptops and other electronic devices.
How Does That Happen?
can be accidentally left on, become damaged after a fall or an accident, or are installed incorrectly causing them to explode or melt when internal electrical components short-circuit. Don't worry; this is extremely uncommon especially if you follow proper handling instructions such as shutting down the vape after use and allowing it to cool.
While this regulation means you can't check your vape pen under the plane with your larger luggage, the rule does allow for the devices to be packed in your carry-on bag.
It is suggested that when you pack your vape in your carry-on, that you put it in a place that is easily accessible. You will be expected to treat the vape, all batteries, and related cords the same as any other electronic device and remove it from your bag prior to going through security.
Any oils or liquids you plan to take with you in your carry-on must be included in the 3-1-1 rule. The 3-1-1 rule states that travelers are restricted to using containers no larger than 3.4 oz. for their liquids, all containers of liquid must be placed in a 1 qt., transparent, plastic, sealable bag and each passenger may have only one bag.
If you wish to carry more fluid than that, you will have to include it in a checked bag. Make sure it's adequately sealed or you will not be very happy upon arrival to your final destination.
Don't Forget!
Don’t forget to empty and clean out your vape prior to leaving for the airport.
